Error Message “Cannot find database supplemental files folder in this location “

Error Message "Cannot find database supplemental files folder <Database Name> in this location <Computer Name>"

Believe it or not, we see this one pretty frequently.  Basically it means that the ACT program either can’t see or doesn’t have the correct permissions to access the supplemental files folder for the database. This folder includes the attachments, layouts, letter templates, queries, reports for your database.  Although it’s not your database per say, you can’t really use ACT with it.

For your network guy, it means that you have a sharing issue or a permissions issue to the location from which the database is shared. In order to find the shared location, you need to go to the server and start the ACTdiag program.  (Start, Run, ACT Diag) this will show you the location of the database.  Once you have found the location of the database,l the areas involved in your trouble shooting are boiled down to the following:

  1. The database has not been shared from within ACT (Tools, Database Maintenance, Share Datebase) sometimes toggling this command once – on and then off and then back on, will re share the database appropriately.
  2. Sometimes there are Errors when opening a shared database.
    1. Windows File and Print Sharing
    2. Security of the Shared Folder
    3. Connecting to the Shared Folder
    4. Multiple Shares Placed on the Database Files Folder
